Choir

A word from our President

Keith Lawrenson”There is nothing so uplifting as singing wonderful music with a group of fellow Choir members and friends and singing well enough to receive a standing ovation as we did on our recent trip to France. For me the Choir has been a weekly source of inspiration coupled with an opportunity to share my passion for music with like-minded choir members. The fantastic bonus is the genuine fellowship and fun we enjoy in our rehearsals, concerts and annual trips. I hope that you gain the same pleasure that we do from our harmony on and off stage.....”

An Introduction to Romsey Male Voice Choir

Who we are

The Romsey Male Voice Choir (RMVC) is a group of enthusiastic and talented singers. Formed in 1995, we have grown our membership from the original 18 to 50, with numbers rising year on year. We pride ourselves on giving professional concerts with an undercurrent of informality, engaging with audiences through our music and informative, humourous introductions to concert pieces by Choir member Terry Morrison. New members should be aware that all performances are characterised by the Choir using no written words or music, which means rehearsing our memories as well as our songs!

Choir practise - Enjoying the ‘afterglow’Our concert schedule includes 5 main concerts a year with a further 3 to 4 events staged on request, along with performances of Christmas carols in Romsey and Southampton. In recent years we have also joined with fellow male voice choirs in the south of England, Wales and France, enjoying an annual weekend away sharing concert programmes with our hosts and performing to local audiences. Social contact is primarily through rehearsals, though we also organise an annual dinner for members and their partners near to Christmas.

The ethos of the Choir is one of mutual support. We expect strong commitment from members and regular attendance at rehearsals and concerts. As part of the local community, our philosophy is to work with musical groups wherever a concert is staged. We are particularly keen to support young people and frequently accept invitations to lead charity concerts.

What we sing

RMVC relishes a challenge, but we also love to sing old favourites such as our trademark ‘American Trilogy’. As a result the mix of music is varied and interesting from classical through to modern musical and rock and African pieces inspired by the Musical Director's origins in South Africa. Some songs are performed in their original language. We believe our versatility sets us apart and helps us all to develop our talents as well as entertaining audiences with a greater breadth and depth of music.

Rehearsals and concerts

The Abbey Hotel, Church StreetThe Choir meets every Monday for rehearsals from 7.30 to 9.30pm apart from a short break during the summer. The venue is the Abbey Hotel in Romsey. Regular attendance is always important especially in the few weeks before a concert. All members are expected to take part in RMVC’s main concerts and other events when they are available.
